Our Design Process
At High Desert Wargames, we make games with three things as our primary concerns: ease of reading the rules, ease of understanding the rules, and low consumer cost.
Ease of Reading the Rules
When we are playing the games that we at High Desert Wargaming enjoy, we often find that a combination of small print and awkward layout make reading the rules before the game difficult, and referencing the rules during the game even more so. Thus, we worked to make our rules easy to read and easy to reference. We use larger, easier to read font with a simple layout in order to alleviate eye strain, something we come across often. We also provide a simple table of contents that references all the elements within each section, so you can find what you want when you want it without too much searching.
Ease of Understanding the Rules
Often, miniature wargames require the players to read through the rules multiple times in order to fully understand the nature of the game. Not only can this be frustrating, but it also takes a significant amount of time. With this in mind, we strive to make our rules simpler and shorter, in order to reduce the amount of preparation time before the game and confusion during it.
Low Consumer Cost
Miniature wargame rules vary greatly in their price, from very inexpensive digital rules to very pricey physical books. On top of the models, many player will end up paying a significant amount just for the rules alone! We at High Desert Wargames want to try to make our games low cost, and we achieve this by having simple digital rulebooks, devoid of unnecessary pictures and graphics. This reduces the time and cost for us to produce the rules, and thus we are able to pass those savings straight to the consumer.
